After Hurricane Maria destroyed the bridge that connects it to everything and ripped the roof and walls off his house here in the central mountains of Puerto Rico, Ramón Sostre raised a weathered American flag above the wreckage.

His message to the world: “I’m alive, and I’m American.
It worked, if temporarily. Helicopters came. So did a tarp, food and bottled water.
Yet little else has changed. His roof is still missing, as are some walls. He and his cat, Tipo, sleep in the kitchen. When the wind blows at night, rain soaks them. The power is out, as it is for roughly 3 million Puerto Ricans, or more than 80% of the island’s residents. More than a third of households in the US territory, including much of Sostre’s community, are without reliable drinking water at home. That’s roughly 1 million American citizens.
One month after Hurricane Maria, these realities are starting to feel less like an emergency and more like the new way of life — a nightmarish loop that resets each day the sun rises.”

A resident sorts through debris Sunday in San Isidro, Puerto Rico.

The US government says it is committed to helping Puerto Rico but is confronted with challenging circumstances, including some roads that are narrow, muddied and impassable for large aid-delivery vehicles. There also are pre-existing problems with power and water systems. Puerto Rico is “an island sitting in the middle of an ocean … a very big ocean,” as President Donald Trump said on September 26, making Hurricane Maria more distant than two other recent storms that hit the US mainland, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Trump is basically stating that since Puerto Rico is surrounded by an ocean that they should have expected to be hit by a hurricane at some point in time, which true they should be prepared for the worst since there is a ton of water around them, but at the same time I believe there is always something that can be done to help Puerto Rico. Roads being blocked off or narrow shouldn’t mean we cant get help to them over there. Get planes or any other flying vehicles that can get there from the U.S. and make it happen. I feel like the president should be able to get done anything he wishes especially something to this nature. Thoughts?

NFL to allow players to kneel during anthem without penalty © Getty Images

The NFL will continue allowing players to kneel during the national anthem at games, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Tuesday.

“We spent today talking about the issues that our players have been trying to bring attention to. About issues in our communities to make our communities better,” Goodell said at a news conference following a meeting between officials and team owners in New York. The meeting included officials from the NFL and the NFL Player’s Association, as well as 11 team owners and 13 NFL players who have protested during the national anthem. “Today’s discussion with our players was very productive and very important. It reflected our commitment to work together with our players on issues of social justice,” Goodell stated.

According to Reuters, the NFL representatives did not press upon players not to kneel, but instead talked about ways to help them in their activism. Goodell had previously said that “everyone should stand” for the national anthem, amid growing pressure for the NFL to take an official stance on the controversial protests. Malcolm Jenkins of the Philadelphia Eagles said after the meeting that there was no talk of penalties against players who protested, according to the New York Times.

President Trump has repeatedly slammed the protests as unpatriotic and disrespectful, calling on NFL owners to fire or suspend players who take part in the protests and for fans to boycott games if players continue to kneel. The president’s ire only sparked more protests, as entire teams began to kneel in protest of racial discrimination and disproportional police violence toward racial minorities.

“Our players are men of great character,” Goodell said at the conference. “They have a very deep understanding and tremendous knowledge of the issues that are going on in all of our communities, and their commitment to addressing these issues is really admirable.” Goodell said the officials, players, and owners would likely meet again within the next two weeks.

Really and truely being a former/current football player I can completely understand where they are coming from with kneeling during the national anthem, but I also think its wrong in so many ways. I feel like Trump handled it the wrong way as well. The only people handling the situation the proper way in my opinion are the soldiers by writing letters to the NFL that are making it viral everywhere. What are your thoughts on the situation?

joanna-jedrzejczyk-ufc-211-ceremonial-weigh-ins

For many years, women’s sports have never gained as much as sports that are dominated by males. They were shunned and cast off. One of the few sports that they have been able to gain some traction in is mixed martial arts. In February 2013, now household name Ronda Rousey competed in the first ever UFC (the biggest company in MMA) women’s title fight where she put away Liz Carmouche via arm bar. Rousey went on an incredible run where she continued to dominate the Octagon until she hit a brick wall in Holly Holm in November of 2015. During this time however another dominate champion was emerging at the 115lb weight class, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Rousey’s Fall

When Ronda Rousey lost to Holly Holm, Joanna had already defended her belt 3 times with one these being on the actual fight card that Rousey lost on. Rousey disappeared and it looked like Holm was going to take the mantle as the face of women’s MMA. That was until she lost to Meisha Tate during her first title defense and continued to lose afterwards. Rousey was nowhere to be seen, Holm was losing, and women’s MMA has looked bleak ever since. However, Jedrzejczyk is still defending her belt two or three times a year and is dominating every single fight she is in. However, she is not getting the same attention that Rousey or Holm ever got. Why is that?

She is a small, Polish, woman

The UFC has always had a tough time marketing smaller fighters and for their business model, it doesn’t help that she is both that and a woman. For years, she was the “other” women’s champion behind Rousey. Now that Rousey is gone, the UFC needs to be marketing her in every way possible. She can talk trash with the best of them even though she is Polish. The way she picks apart her opponents is very similar to the way Floyd Mayweather picks people apart in the boxing ring. In fact, many MMA experts have even said that she is the best striker in the entire UFC. She also isn’t a bad looking woman either.

She is the clear choice to be the face of Women’s MMA, yet it hasn’t happened and it will probably continue to happen unless one of two things happen. The UFC just established a 125lb weight class and Jonna has expressed interest in moving up to that weight class to attempt to become the first woman ever to hold two UFC titles at the same time; something only one male has ever accomplished in the sports history. If she can accomplish that, then that might propel her to stardom. The other thing that needs to happen is Rousey needs to retire. She came back and got embarrassed by Amanda Nunes. All signs point to her now being done with the sport, yet she hasn’t made anything official. As long as she doesn’t, her shadow will loom large over the UFC and she will always be the topic of conversation.

The UFC needs to make the move now though and put all their eggs in the “Joanna Champion” bucket. It is time for there to be a new face of Women’s MMA and it just isn’t fair that she is getting pushed to the side while Rousey and all of the male fighters continue to be in headlines.  She is the best female fighter in the world and she will continue to be as long as she keeps winning. She has done great things for women in MMA and it is time for that to be recognized.

What other women aren’t recognized enough in sports?

Recently I’ve been working really hard to pursue my football dream of playing professional football at any level. With that being said I’ve been training for all kind of testing stuff related to NFL combines that pro teams look for. That includes Route Running, Footwork Drills, etc. So what I did was made a video of me doing that stuff with a cool intro with my background in Digital Media I have the upper hand over most people trying to pursue their football careers because I know how to film and edit my own stuff. Below it some of the stuff I’ve made.

Footwork & Route Running Drills

College Football Highlights

With all the classes I’ve taken in my field I’ve learn tons about every aspect of video making and honestly could get into any type of editing due to the passion I have for it. I enjoy making documentaries, promotional videos, PSA’s, etc. Its really just one of those things that I love to do.

Being a Former College Athlete I’ve learned a lot of how to never give up on something you want in life and the two things that I’ve always wanted was to play professional football and graduate college, which at the moment is looking really good and with the degree in the Digital Media area helps with so many things that are used a lot in this generation. Technology is huge in this era and this Media program at Central is really good with teaching us how to use this new technology that is coming out in different ways.

Working for Sports Page and Warrensburg High School Football gets you soooooo much hands on experience with the equipment and production itself that you’ll NEED in order to get a job after graduating that its almost an opportunity that you can’t pass up if you want to succeed in this field. Its crucial to do an internship or practicum of some sort to get hands on experience with equipment because its really all you’ll be doing. I never thought I would get as good with working with an actual production crew of tri-caster or any of that good stuff until I started doing hands on productions for sports around the area. Its definitely something I would recommend to anyone looking to pursue some sort of degree in this field or work for any type of studio production team.

Recently, I made a trip up to Kansas City to do some shooting on a documentary that I am making. The documentary is about two twelve year old boxers that are also twin brothers. I went up to the gym they train at to get some footage of them and there were definitely some challenges that I faced when shooting. Some problems were easily fixed. Others, not so much.

First off, the gym they train in was very small. It is kept in the basement of a community center that is very old. To get an idea of how old this place was, one of the rings there had been there since 1917. Anyways, the rings were just barely able to fit in the rooms they were held. This really limited what I could do as far as camera movement goes. To actually move the camera around the ring, I had to take it into the ring first, put it on the other side of the ring and then do the same with the tripod. It was hard to get some shots, but the way I worked around this was by recruiting a crew.

A crew is a very important part of the film making process. Whenever you can, I highly recommend getting a few extra hands to help out. My crew was able to help making moving all the gear pretty easily and it didn’t take as long as it would’ve if I would’ve been by myself.  I also had one of my crew members man a second camera on a handheld rig. This gave them the freedom to get shots that I couldn’t because it just would’ve been a process to move everything around.

The other big thing that probably will create problems in post production was the lighting in the gym. There were many different types of lights in the gym so it was hard to really nail down a color temperature. I ended up setting the White Balance at around 5000K and the footage looks alright right now. Because the cameras we used shoot so desaturated though, there is going to be heavy color correction going on. The challenge is going to be getting it to match the handheld cameras colors. The camera I shot on was the Black Magic Production Camera and the other was a DSLR camera. DSLR’s shoot color pretty much to a T so that is what I am going to try to match up.

Keeping the brothers in focus when they were sparring was also a little difficult just because they were moving so fast. I constantly had to ride the focus to try and keep them from being blurry. If I could’ve done it again, I would’ve changed some of my camera settings such as the aperture to give me room to work with.

All and all the footage turned out really well and I am excited to get to editing on it. What problems have you encountered on shoots?

Heterosexual privilege is when something takes for granted the privilege they have US. What is heterosexual? A person who is heterosexual is emotional, physically and sexual attracted to the opposite sex. Have you ever consider what privilege heterosexual have over lesbians, bisexual, gay and transgender. An example of a heterosexual privilege is they can show their sexual attraction without being judged or being ashamed. This blog will point key privilege heterosexual, show why they should appreciate it, and help heterosexual gain a better understand of LGBT challenges.

In the article 30+ Examples of Heterosexual Privilege in the US by Sam Killermann (DATE) 5 key examples of the privileges heterosexual have are:

  1. Immediate access to your loved one in case of accident or emergency.
  2. Expressing affection in most social situations and not expecting hostile or violent reactions from others.
  3. The ability to teach about lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals without being seen as having a bias because of your sexuality or forcing a “homosexual agenda” on students.
  4. The ability to play a professional sport and not worry that your athletic ability will be overshadowed by your sexuality and the fact that you share a locker room with the same gender.
  5. Not risking a chance of being fired from job.

These five privileges are just a few out of many more. There obstacle homosexuals have go through in order to see loved ones if an emergency. They are asked question to prove they are here for the loved one. This could become annoying to a homosexual because they are stressed wondering if there lover one is okay.  In today’s society we don’t see people who identify LGBT community express their affection for their partner. Most times they are afraid of consequences they could face and what others will think. Heterosexual have the free will to express their affection for their partner. People rarely see lesbian’s bisexual gay and transgender kissing in public.

Sometime heterosexuals are focus on their own life they fail to realized what advantages they have .It important heterosexuals are aware of the privilege have so they can appreciate them. The goal is to give those same privileges to homosexuals. Why should homosexuals be hinder, judge and not treated unequally.

Teaching about LGBT topics or even talking about them can make people ASSUME that you are providing the way it should be or an agenda, when the LGBT person may simply be explaining something.

What about being a gay man who is an athlete, how often are they thought to be “looking” at all of the guys in the shower?  Why can’t the heterosexual person simply think that the gay athlete is showering and not ogling the other mens bodies.

Can LGBT people put pictures of their loved ones on their desk without worry that they will be harassed, just as the straight people can?

In 1963 congressed passed the Equal Pay Act. This act acknowledged woman and the discrimination they were faced in jobs.according to The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC),The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women be given equal pay for equal work in the same establishment. It is sad to say, 6 decades last woman still are underpaid in America. Did you know, on average a woman earn 79 cent for every dollar a men earns.
When typed into google, Top 10 jobs to pay women less than men there was thousands of article about this topic. In the article 5 charts show how much more men make than women Sonam Sheth and Skye Gould it was stated “ According to data taken from the US Census Bureau, the average gender pay gap in the United States is around 21%, meaning that, on average, a woman earns 21% less than her male counterpart. That gap can be larger or smaller depending on the state someone lives in. In Louisiana, for instance, the gender pay gap is 34.7%, the biggest wage gap in the nation. 21 states in the country currently have gender pay gaps that are larger than the national average.” These percentages are ridiculously high. Most young women and in some cases older women have no clue of these issues. Women who are Hispanic and African American face a bigger wage gap compared to Asian and Caucasian women. Caucasian straighten men are the highest paid indivuals in amerce.

In Charlie Nash article, Bank Behind ‘Fearless Girl’ Statue Pays $5M for Over 300 Gender Discrimination Allegations quotes Bloomberg, “The custody bank will pay $5 million to more than 300 women, following a U.S. Department of Labor audit that uncovered the alleged discrepancies.” “The Labor Department alleged that women in senior leadership positions at Boston-based State Street received lower base salaries, bonus pay and total compensation since at least December 2010,” they continued, adding, “The company said it has cooperated fully with the agency and that it disagreed with the findings of the audit, which was done in 2012.” Nash shines light out this issues to being awarressen to the people. The company acknowledges women has experience discrimination and they are eager to fix the issue.
So how do we try to fix this issues? First we been awareness , one that has knowleged about the different wages between a woman can help educated others. Next, is taking the proper action in fixing the issue protecting, talking with state representative or even forming a group that is dedicated to fix the problem and all steps both men and women can take against the issue. These types of social justice issues will be fix if the people of America stands together as one. Ultimately, the primary goal is to promote equality for all.

The Lack of Ethnically Diverse Teachers in an Ethnically Diverse America

In America, most ethnic minority children are taught by a teacher that is racially and culturally different from them. The majority of teachers in America are Caucasian females. This is problematic, as studies have shown that Caucasian teachers consistently have more conflict with ethnic minority students, particularly African American males.

The higher rates of conflictual relationships between Caucasian teachers and ethnic minority students has academic and interpersonal consequences. Students who have conflictual relationships with teachers are more likely to have conflictual relationships with future teachers. Additionally, preschoolers with conflictual relationships with their teachers with are more likely to have slower literacy gains and negative views of academic self-competence.

sophiablogpic

In some cases, negative relationships and interactions between Caucasian teachers and ethnic minority students are attributed to implicit racial biases and attitudes teachers may possess. Research has shown that in some instances, Caucasian teachers interact differently with Caucasian students than ethnic minority students. Furthermore, Caucasian teachers perceive relationships with their African American students to be the most conflictual compared to students of other ethnicities, suggesting that race impacts how the teacher forms and perceives the relationship quality.

Studies have conversely shown African American teachers have more positive relationships and higher expectations of African American students compared to Caucasian teachers. Additionally, an African American preschooler is more likely to demonstrate better adjustment in a classroom with an African American teacher.

What Can We Do?

America is diverse in every way. It is necessary for the classrooms in America to mirror the melting pot America truly is. Ethnic minority teachers are needed in these ethnically diverse classrooms of students. The implicit biases about race some teachers possess are detrimental to ethnic minority childrens’ academic achievement and social-emotional development. It’s time a shift is made and we encourage diversity in these diverse classrooms.

USA Women’s Soccer Fight for Equal Pay

This past year the USA women’s national soccer team filed a lawsuit against the US Soccer Federation demanding they are paid the same as the US men’s national team. Statistics and facts show that even top women players in the US are paid between 28% and 62% less than men, depending on the kind of match (money.cnn.com). Most of this story caught fire during the summer of 2016. The USWNT has been in every World Cup through 2015 and won a medal in each. Also, they have been in every Olympic tournament through 2016 and have won a medal in each except this past year. But they have won and brought home the gold in four out of the last six Olympic Games.

After laying out those quick facts you would think they would be paid more than the men. And when you look at the USMNT’s tournament track record it is not even close in comparison. Having only made it to the semi-finals in the World Cup once in their history the USWNT have more than enough proof to back up their fight. People have different arguments against the women’s national team’s fight, but, the facts speak for them self. The USWNT are the #1 rank women’s soccer team in the world, and have been for a while. The USMNT currently rank 28th in the world.

Today, they are still keeping up the fight and have gotten the agreement with the US Soccer Federation they were looking for. In April, both sides agreed to a new deal that will last through the 2021 season. “I am incredibly proud of this team and the commitment we have shown through this entire process,” said U.S. midfielder Megan Rapinoe in a joint statement released by the two sides. “While I think there is still much progress to be made for us and for women more broadly, I think the WNTPA should be very proud of this deal and feel empowered moving forward.”

The new CBA includes: A commitment from U.S. Soccer to pay the NWSL salaries for allocated players; a return commitment by the players to compete in the NWSL; a requirement for the improvement of NWSL standards; and the ability of the WNTPA to control group likeness rights for licensing and non-exclusive rights in sponsorship categories where U.S. Soccer does not have a sponsor (si.com).

The new CBA also provides: A significant increase in direct compensation and bonus compensation; enhanced “lifestyle” benefits for the players with respect to travel and hotels; per diems that are equal to those of the men’s team; and greater financial support for players who are pregnant and players adopting a child (si.com).

NFL Start to Understand and Support

RT.com

Today, the NFL headlines focus more on Colin Kaepernick and players protesting during the national anthem than they do about the actual game itself. Not until recently has the NFL seemed open to the idea of supporting the protesting before games. This past week NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie joined several players to learn more about the Philadelphia criminal justice system. This is the first time the commissioner or an NFL owner has done anything about the recent protests during games, besides making comments in interviews.

Goodell made news in August for answering a question about the protests during the national anthem. When asked the question he responded “It’s one of those things where I think we have to understand that there are people that have different viewpoints,” Goodell said. “The national anthem is a special moment to me. It’s a point of pride. But we also have to understand the other side, that people do have rights and we want to respect those (USA Today).” Players did not agree with Goodell’s answer and wanted more action and not just words. This recent appearance by Goodell and Lurie in Philadelphia was a good step for those players who are seeking more action support in the protests.

Players Look for Assistance

Former and present players this week have sent Goodell a ten page memo seeking his support for their social justice campaign across the NFL. The 10-page memo, obtained by Yahoo Sports, was sent to Goodell and executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent in August, requesting wide-ranging involvement in their movement from the NFL. The memo seeks an investment of time and education, political involvement, finances and other commitments from the league. It also sought to have the NFL endorse the month of November as an activism awareness month, similar to the periods of league calendar dedicated to breast cancer awareness and military recognition (Yahoo Sports). The NFL or Goodell has yet to comment on the documents sent to them. But, with the recent participation from Goodell in Philadelphia, it has many fans, players, and reporters optimistic for the NFL’s participation in the protesting of players.

For many players the fight is not over. As weeks go by, more and more players are starting to raise a fist, sit on the bench, take a knee, or simply place a hand on a players shoulders. But, they still have not gotten the support from the NFL itself. Fans are starting to voice support in what the players are standing up for, and most importantly, the commissioner Roger Goodell might be as well.

What do you think? Is the NFL starting to pay attention to the players?
